Comet
Sailplane Project
I have decided to cover the Sailplane wing and
stab with the four yards of yellow silk I have on hand (one
3-yard piece and one 1-yard piece with a 10" X 10" corner cut out of it).
I have spent most of the afternoon measuring the Sailplane plans and laying
out the various pieces (with a 1" margin all around) on a piece of graph
paper shown below. I wanted to see if I had enough silk, being sure to keep
the grain running spanwise on the individual pieces. I had to cut the two
36" stab pieces out of the 3-yard piece because there was no margin
available with the 1-yard piece. This was a lot work, however I did prove
to myself I had enough yellow silk. Now the trick will be to accurately cut
out all of the eighteen individual pieces and stay within a (+/-) 1/2"
tolerance. You know silk really tries to move or crawl around when you are
cutting it with scissors. Maybe I need to try and use a straight edge and a
sharp razor blade. Do you have any suggestions on how you would go
about cutting these pieces out accurately?.................Tandy
