Speed 400
Cloudster Project
The start of the prototype Speed 400 motor mount
begins with the making of a motor tube shown below. Rectangular piece of
1/64" plywood is cut to size with the width to fit around the Speed 400
motor case. A piece of masking tape is laid on
the motor case lengthwise to (1) prevent the tube from being too tight
around the motor and to (2) keep the CA along the motor tube seam from
sticking to the motor case. The plywood is wrapped around the motor and
trimmed slightly to fit to the seam. Rubber bands are wrapped around the
outside of the tube to pull it down tightly against the circumference of the
motor. If you look close, there are short pieces of plywood over the seam to
push the long edges of the motor tube together. CA is first applied to the
inside ends of the motor tube and let dry. Next, as shown above, CA is
applied to center of the outside seam of the motor tube. The rubber bands
are moved around and CA applied until the entire seam of the motor tube has
been bonded.
A torodial ring of 1/64" plywood was made and
CA'd to the center of the motor tube as shown below to preserve the circular
form of the motor mount tube. In addition a 1/16" plywood mounting plate
with a hole for the motor tube to slip into was made also to preserve the
circular form of the motor mount tube as shown below. More on this hand made
motor mount design later.
Jay Burkhart and Jack Hiner have been advising me
on what electrical components I need for the Speed 400 power train. I placed
my order with Hobby Lobby around 9:30 a. m. Monday morning. They were out of
stock on the Speed 400 motors, the Lipo batteries, and the props! :O< I
received the order confirmation from Hobby Lobby below. Scott (the Hobby
Lobby sales guy) said they should be able to ship all but the props in about
two weeks. The props however will not be in for about six weeks, which is no
problem because I won't need them for a while anyway. Also I do have a Speed
400 motor I use to build the motor mount with.........................Tandy
